She makes eating well a family affair.
You might think of her as an Oscar-winning actress, but the low-key star told CBS This Morning she prefers to be called a “stay-at-home mom” to her three kids, Phinnaeus, Hazel, and Henry.
She’s making sure she passes on a few healthy lessons she’s picked up over the years: “We definitely try to eat mindfully,” she told In Style. “As I always say to my kids, ‘You have to eat the good stuff to get the good stuff.'” We love that philosophy!
She trains four times a week for an hour.
Roberts studies yoga to keep up her fitness, according to E! Online, but she also enjoys plyometrics (aka jump training), pilates, and aquatic workouts, as well.
“I don’t love exercise, but I do love how I feel afterwards,” Roberts told The Independent. “Accomplishment, clarity, energy, strength, joy… these are all things I give myself through working out, and I can feel it in everything I do.”
Roberts’ trainer Kathy Kaehler spoke to ELLE in 2010 about how the star managed to travel around the globe for “Eat Pray Love” while remaining committed to staying in shape: “We currently do 20 to 40 minutes of step aerobics and up to 40 minutes of body work — lunges, crunches, planks, push-ups — after.”
She brushes her teeth with baking soda.
Obviously, dental hygiene is important for a woman with such a famous smile. So how does Roberts maintain her trademark grin? “I brush [my teeth] with baking soda,” she told In Style in 2012. “[My grandfather] would put a big heaping mound of it on his toothbrush. He had only one cavity in his entire life.”
She’s very minimalistic about her beauty regimen.
Her teeth-cleaning method isn’t the only thing she keeps simple.
“Look, I’m happy if I have on moisturizer and ChapStick! When you’re dressing three people besides yourself, something has to fall away,” she told InStyle.
Her daily routine? “On a regular day, I’ll just brush my teeth, wash my face, and apply sunblock,” she told Viva. “I’m a busy mom, and sometimes I just sunblock my kids and run outside and get my nose burned. So I’ve made a stronger effort to take care of myself.”
In her efforts to take better care of herself, Roberts has started using extra-virgin olive oil to rejuvenate her skin, according to Vogue Italia. The actress reportedly massages a few drops of EVOO and warm water onto her skin to give her a glowing complexion. (It clearly works, Julia!)
She realizes she’s going to age whether she wants to or not.
Roberts turns 50 this October, and many of her recent press interviews have brought it up. And because she’s Julia Roberts, when she was asked about how she ages so naturally and gracefully, she had the best response:
“Trying to have some peace with the aging process. Just realizing that it’s going to happen whether I like it or not,” Roberts told Viva.
There are a few things Julia Roberts does to stay in shape.
1. She Is Not Afraid Of Carbs
Let’s face it. Most of us fear carbs so much. There’s a misconception that they’re the reason for weight gain. However, Julia Roberts’s iconic favorite food involves carbs. Not to say that she eats pizza every day or piles of pasta. However, it clearly shows that you can splurge once a week and still look amazing. So long as you eat well every other single day.
2. She Uses Dumbbells
One of the best ways to get rid of belly fat is to increase your muscle mass. The only way to properly do this is to incorporate regular resistance training exercises into your fitness routine, particularly with weights. Julia Roberts’s iconic fitness routine is pretty solid and consists of lunges, oblique bends, and squats. Obviously, there are others, but these are all done with dumbbells, completing a total of three sets of each.
3. Roberts Does Pilates and Yoga
You’re probably very familiar with the health benefits that yoga has on the mind, body, and soul. However, Pilates is known as a powerhouse and is an effective exercise worth your time too, especially if you’d like to follow Roberts’ routine! Her routine interchanges between moves like double leg lifts, scissor kicks, and bent leg lifts.
4. She Keeps Active
Besides Pilates and Yoga, the actress keeps herself fit with step aerobics, running, swimming, and a core-focused class called ‘Body Work.’ Apparently, Julia Roberts’ fitness schedule involves 20-40 minutes of step aerobics followed by 40 minutes of Body Work! Step aerobics allows her to work out while still being able to watch her kids as they run around the house during their younger years. She is a super mom!
‘Bodywork’ is a workout that focuses entirely on core-engaging exercises that get rid of bloating. Julia Roberts’s iconic routine includes 40 minutes of circuits including push-ups, planks (60 seconds each), body squats, lunges, and ab crunches. Clearly, that is why she is so toned! Lastly, when she’s not doing those exercises, she’s swimming or running. Swimming is a great way to resistance train, build up endurance and stamina. It also keeps those love handles at bay! Going for a run can burn anywhere from 75 to 100 calories – making it an ideal way to shed some weight.
